Ah Shu telling story

So me and Paris Hilton were exchanging stories about people getting married and she told me about a friend of hers who has a sister who's about to get married. She told me about how they met. And I fictionalized it into this series of letters:

*

dear girl, i don't know you but i can imagine that you're hot. if that is so then i'll want to marry you. love, boy.

*

dear boy, i AM hot. but even if i'm not, i'll lie to you and tell you that i'm hot, just so u'll marry me. cos i want to marry you too. love, girl.

*

dear girl, i think currently the vibes are shooting in the wrong direction, but i think it's okay. i'm a good christian boy and i won't be evil.i may be horny but i won't commit adultery. love, boy

*

dear boy, it's okay. i know how men are. but i trust you. it's just the sixth sense thing where i know u're the right male for me. and it's okay, i'm horny too, though i have no horns. haha. lame. i know. miss you, even though i've never seen u before. love, girl.

*

And that's it. There's actually a very raunchy bit at the end which I decided I will not post here for fears of embarassing shu. So if you wanna read it. Contact me privately and maybe i'll whisper it in your ear.

The West Wing's finishing move

So the 58th Emmy Awards is over. The West Wing didn't kick up the big fight and stun the world as I had hoped it would, but still...

Alan Alda took the prize for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Senator Arnold Vinick. I've yet to see him act (I'm only up to season 5. He came in at season 6) but at least, the series takes a respectable bow away from the television.

Bye.
I actually really do feel sad that it's over. I wonder how I'll feel when I finish watching all seven seasons.

It is time to chop chop and kik butt

The Emmy awards are tomorrow. Not that I usually care too much about the Emmys. Well, I cared for a few years, when The West Wing was winning and sweeping and trouncing everyone in their way. Then when their creator and principle writer left the series the Emmys meant nothing to me anymore.

But the series has ended. And much to my delight The West Wing still has a Best Drama Series nomination, and while I recognize that the other four TV shows nominated are favorites, let me say this:

The West Wing rocks. They've won it four times in a row before (which is not something a lot of TV shows can say. In fact, I can't remember any other show that has that record) and I am still praying for a surprise finale to the most fantabulous television series of all time.

So.

What's next?

The official trailer for Lov is here. Check it out.

Mental Toys 2nd Anniversary

So I checked the calendar and noticed that this blog has just survived two years. Wow. Thanks Szen once again for introducing me to the term "weblog/blog". I remember it took me quite a while to understand what she was saying. I went "HAR?" many times, or "WHAT?"

So, I was scrolling through Eddie's blog, and saw that he listed down his favorite blog posts from times past. A bit narcissictic, but I like it.

So I'll do that. I'll list down 25 links from this blog that I personally felt a tinge of satisfaction when I published it. It'll be a mix of personal favorites and those that generated er... comments. Eh, sometimes it's okay to be proud of one's own stuff okay.

1. Romantic Sense
2. Toilet Fight
3. Sightings
4. Sleeping
5. B dot M and B dot I
6. Flirting with God

7. Any of the "Wasting Away" posts. It's sorta like a personal Sandman. Lol. Okay, roll eyes. Staring March 2005 to... I don't know. (If I had to pick ONE post from the wasting away series, it's this one. Click here.)

8. The Fairy Tales: Episode 5 - The Whitening of the Snow

Random Trivia for "Lov"

So I'm making a new short film, called "LOV". If you want to do away with the details you can jump straight to the timeline/trivia at the bottom. This is a lengthy post. Been meaning to tell this story for a while, but never got around to it cos this film just kept on not being made.

Synopsis
A series of unrelated short stories (including a photo story about, you guessed it, a stick and a match) about the best friends and love. Is it okay for "best" friends to fall in love with each other, are they already in love and not know it, or is it an absolutely icky yucky thing to even think about? In short, this short film asks the question, "What if my best friend is the love of my life? Will time stop?"
Okay lameless.
Tentative Release
Some time early October, 2006 (Thesis + COM4020 papers comes first, sadly.)

The Cast
Mohammad Yasir - Ali
Choung Ji Hye - herself
Eddie Goh - Lex
Joanne Soo - Lois
Koh Chien Aun - Robin
Lynette Goh - Victoria
Aaron Lee - Ah Beng
Tan Shu Yi - The Storyteller
(might change as I'm planning additional scenes)

So here's what happened:
October 2005 - Captivation completed. I started thinking of a new film to make. Decided that I wanna do something about love again.

November 2005 - Finished Takau 1.5. Around this time I remember discussing with Shi Ying about an interracial love story again. Something along the the lines of two people really loving each other, and one of them. Can't remember for sure what the story was now, but it involved a rape scene. It was around that time when the title "Lov" first surfaced.

December 2005 - Started writing Robotica, a science fiction/drama, about an alien who comes to Earth, and starts learning things about multiracial Malaysia and multinational Earth, and finds it all ridiculous how we mix race/nationality and whatever else into how we live our lives.
Mind you, in my head I had the entire picture, but never got past 5 pages on the computer.

January 2006 - Various drafts of LOV completed. Went on a writing spree. Story now focuses on a systematic male womanizer, Paul, who cheats on his wife, Gillian, and how his system of meeting different women at different times eventually collapses. Slightly provocative story, but an honest one. Aaron Lee was set to play Paul.

various poster concepts at the time

February 2006
- Unable to start filming due to a trillion different reasons. No equipment, bad timing, bla bla bla.

March 2006 - Decided to say farewell to LOV once again.

April - May 2006 - Spent most of my video life campaigning for Sunway-Monash Christian Fellowship camp: Stop. Listen. Go. Did two promo videos and one post-camp slide show.
June 2006 - Started converting a short story by my dear friend Susanna Khoo into something filmable. Started filming some scenes with Joanne playing the lead role. Basically it's about a girl's lost love and her encounter with a character called Loneliness. It was gonna be a noir-ish flashback thingy... Tentatively titled it Of Those Who Love

June 2006 - Cancelled Of Those Who Love cos I looked back at the footage and decided that it looked too crappy. The sets anyway, not the performers. It looked nothing like what it's supposed to be, not even mildly.

July 2006 - Revived the interracial romance idea again (After toying around with an idea about a global assassination of superheroes). Then decided, "Heck it. If I can't find an actor who can spend time making this, then I'm just gonna make many short stories with different people so that no one needs to be committed beyond an hour or so".

July 2006 - Got an idea from a friend about how icky it can be, but also how sweet it can be, for best friends to fall in love. About how it just makes sense to do so. Decided that it will be the theme of the film. Started filming with Eddie and Joanne, then with Lynette and Chien Aun.

August 11, 2006 - Filming continues slowly. Around this time I decided to title the film "Lov". So finally, LOV is being made, after almost a year of waffling around.

August 14, 2006 - Sample recording of some bits of the film done, and sent to Bei Yan so that she has something to refer to when writing the music.

August 16, 2006 - Shu Yi completes recording of opening and ending narration in true Paris Hilton style in an hour. Most footages uploaded to PC. Editing begins. LOV officially enters post-production phase

*

More to film next week. Maybe one or two more scenes.

*

So there you go. Mini journey of a mini film.
After that I'll part ways with Cheesy Studios for REAL. Lol.

The Evil Monkey

Okay. Was digging through old pictures and this pic caught my eye.

This monkey here tried to kill my current CF president, Liang.

Last year, when the outgoing CF comm first had Liang and Oon Ee join us for a retreat, we went to Rawang, and part of the retreat was a little outing at Templar's Park. As we walked through the park something nearly fell on Liang's head. A rotten fruit I think, or something like that. We got a bit shocked, and looked up. We saw the monkey. I zoomed all the way up and snapped a picture of the monkey staring right down at us.

Now I'm not so sure if the rest of those there at the time remember this little story, but here you go.

Lady in the Water

Lady in the Water
Written and Directed by M Night Shyamalan
Starring Paul Giamatti, Bryce Dallas Howard, and all the tenants of that apartment.

Now, maybe this will eventually become one of those guilty pleasures, since many many critics have dismantled this movie as senseless, boring, pointless, and many other things. Truth be told, almost all the M Night Shyamalan movies are guilty pleasures of sorts for me. People generally cringe when I say I enjoy Signs or Unbreakable, or even The Village. Well, I watched Lady in the Water and midway through the movie I said to my friend beside me, "You know, I'm actually really enjoying this."

Basically it's about this girl, Story (Howard), who dropped from the wherever she came from, the Blue World, to seek some guy out... some guy who'll change the world. Cleveland Heep (Giamatti) finds her living in the swimming pool of the apartments that he manages and protects us and helps her in her quest. So that's the story. 100% of it revolves around the apartment block, its tenants, and the swimming pool. The story takes on a fairy tale twist. Basically Heep and the other tenants are like characters from fairy tales, aiding the protaganist in her quest to return home, while fending off the evil monsters in the grass.

He is he one.

Giamatti pulls off his stuttering/non-stuttering role well, and Bryce Dallas Howard interchanges between being inspiring and careful very accurately. Shyamalan, instead of taking on his usual cameo performance, actually has a rather prominent role in the film. Most of the supporting cast are unique and interesting. The story doesn't entirely make sense, but hey, it's a fairy tale. Fairy tales never make sense anyway. Casting logic aside, the ride is a truly fun one, taking twist after twist, turn after turn, bump after bump, and growl after growl.

I see dead people.

One of the rare positive for a Shyamalan film is the superb photography. Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, and The Village all had okay cinematography, but Lady in the Water is a carefully filmed masterpiece. The colors were both pale and stark at the same time. The butterflies fluttering with significance, Story telling of her quest while water from the shower keeps her safe... the mood was well set by clever visuals. Then when the credits rolled in I saw that Christopher Doyle was the DOP. Ah, no wonder. Doyle was the DOP for a few of Wong Kar Wai and Zhang Yi Mou's more successful films, and well, now he's done it again.

And James Newton Howard again presents a magnificent piece of composition that never rises to gargantuan proportions, but complements the pace of the film. Whatever seams the film had (and there were a few), the music distracts the viewers from it.

So it would seem that I have nothing bad to say about this film. Well. Here you go

Rating: B+

The Fairy Tales: Epilogue - The Songs of Eternity

A young lady, cloaked in grey, a walking stick in hand, journeyed very far to reach this place.

*

She came from the forest of a faraway land, bartered her treasures with the sailors to take her to the Eastern shores, where even sailors never sail to. On her sea journey sea nymphs took the ship away, but the Sirens knew who the young lady was, and spared her life. She was a nymph once, one of the sweet singers of death. Or at least, she has a bloodline that can be traced to these surreal creatures of the sea.

The Sirens laid her by the cliffs where they resided, and let her sleep. Constantly fading in and out of sleep, the young lady could hear the sirens sing in the night. The songs they sang in their own homes were significantly different from that which they sing to lustful sailors. They sang songs that told many stories. They sang songs of how the world began. They sang songs of how the first fairy was born. They sang songs of androids from outer space. They sang songs of men who bedded their king. They sang songs about gods. They sang songs about everything.

And the young lady remembered everything, though she did not try to. She just remembered everything.

Your were once one of us, princess. You do not need to learn our songs. You only need to find them. The world and all things knowable is in your blood. You do not need to know your tale, or how you came to be here. Just know that the Sirens will never harm you. And we will take you to as far as we can to where your heart desires to be.

The young lady woke up, fresh and young again, in a vast desert. From there she continued walking until nightfall. She no longer needed her walking stick. She looked at the pale moon, and whispered a prayer, and sang a song of the Sirens.

The moon glowed like the sun upon hearing a song of the seas sung in the desert. The young lady sang on with her eyes closed. The song gave her warmth and comfort, and the world changed around her. When she awoke from her sleep, she was among the clouds, white and moist. She was younger still, and she walked on air. She walked till the clouds turned grey, and she rested again, and sang a song.

Raindrops formed and fell as her song of the seas echoed through the skies and beyond. And the next day, she found herself in space, without a body. Still she walked. And she sang as she walked, until she met the Godfather of Fairies, who waited for her at walls of the universe, of all creation.

"I want my baby back, O Godfather of Fairies," said the young lady.

"I admire your persistence, Princess Belle of the Forbidden Forest, but even if I grant you your wish, you cannot have her again. You have travelled too far to find me. You have died."

"I am still here,"Princess Belle stubbornly retorted.

"And so long as you remain here you will not be taken to the land of the dead. So, I bid you stay," said the Godfather of Fairies.

"Stay and do what? I've come here to beg for your mercy, but it seems even your mercy can do me no good anymore."

"But it can, and my mercy you shall have. You may stay in this realm, and observe all things, including your daughter. Her life, and her death, everything. I understand that it might be more painful to merely see her through the windows of my home, but the choice is yours."

"Is there nothing else you can do for me?"

"I'm afraid not. I am sorry."

"And out of curiosity, what were you offered?"

"To take your child away?"

"Yes,"

"A lot."

"Ah."

End.

So, at last, I've finished the story. 10 parts in all. You can read them in this order.

Episode 1: The Lost Princess
Episode 2: Acts of the Servant in-Law
Episode 3: The Fairy of Fairies
Episode 4: The Coronation of Cinderella
Episode 5: The Whitening of the Snow
Episode 6: The Heart Made of Glass
Episode 7: Pantheon of the Immortal Princesses
Episode 8: Tales of Royalties and a Shoemaker
Episode 9: Long Live the Queen
Epilogue: The Songs of Eternity

Even though at some point it got a bit difficult to continue making sense, this still is the first time I've ever completed a mini series of sorts. I've plagarised lots, infringed on a ton of copyrighted material, and made hamsters look stupid, but it was fun while it lasted. Muaks. See you at the end of the universe. /tmy

The Fairy Tales: Episode 9 - Long live the Queen

The world flooded very quickly as the ice melted away. Within days half the original Fairyland was covered in water. Fishes found new territory. Land beings scrambled up the tallest mountains. Merpeople rose from the depths of the oceans and established their expanded territory. A castle of pearls, reflecting rainbow colors under the sunlight, emerged in the center of the land. It was a new age, and the merpeople seized all the shipsand secured every trade route in the newly formed world.

The land beings were not happy. Their time was short, and space was scarce. A meeting between the King of the merpeople and the last remaining Prince of the land will be their only hope for any sort of... well, hope.

Only the last remaining Prince wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone. He hid in his castle, half submerged in the waters. He curled up in the cellar, waiting. He slept very little, but dreamt a lot. He has waited for many years to finally leave his castle. The day is coming. But not yet. And until that time comes, he will remain in his castle.

*

The King of Mermaids, King Neptune, sat by the shore. The Forbidden Forest was by then more like the Forbidden Beach. Masses gathered by the shore, waiting for their Prince to come.

"Where is your representative? I much desire to speak with him?" asked King Neptune.

"We do not know, King Neptune. He has not appeared in a long time," answered an elf.

"Then how am I to decide anything? I want the best for both worlds. I do not want to reject the gods and not embrace the era of Merpeople, but I do not want to be a cruel king. Land beings have great men and women, and I have known some of them. Your kind have value, and I do not wish to see you all dead? Find your Prince. He will give you hope."

"We dare not seek him out, Mer-King"

"Why not?"

"Because he is a coward!" cried a voice, "and he is most likely dead!"

The masses looked high and low, searching for the source of the voice.

"I am the representative that you seek. I am Queen Cinderella, and with me the Godfather of Fairies."

A great murmur took place, and the Merpeople and the land people saw two little hamsters scramble through the crowds to stand before King Neptune. The first hamster, a he hamster, was clod in glass clothing, and had glass slippers. The second hamster, a she-hamster, was a naked hamster. King Neptune observed the hamsters, and asked, "and who might you be?"

"Didn't I just say?" said the he-hamster with a loud booming voice. "I am Queen Cinderella, the ruler of this land."

King Neptune giggled, and asked, "You, he-hamster, are the Queen of this land? You must have made a mistake."

"Look King of Mermaids. I died once. And while I was busy trying to reincarnate myself me and the Godfather of Fairies miscommunicated our message to the visiting hamsters and we ended up being in the wrong body. But we will sort that out eventually. But in the meantime, I am the QUEEN OF THIS LAND!"

The masses laughed, as did the King of Merpeople. He beckoned the Godfather of Fairies, the naked she-hamster, to perform a spell to prove his identity.

"I'll show you, King Neptune," squeaked the young girly hamster, "what only the Godfather of Fairies can do."

The masses laughed at their Queen and her advisor. The she-hamster jumped on two feet, danced about in circles, then pointed her/his tail at the elf who spoke to the King earlier, and made him psychotic. The elf began to sing songs of the underworld, and songs of the Mannikin, and songs of the sea nymphs. He sang and sang and sang until he hit his head on a tree, and fainted.

The masses stopped laughing.

"So, King Neptune. Shall we negotiate?" growled Queen Cinderella.

"Sure. Forgive my laughter. You may speak first, Queen Cinderella."

"Leave this place. I am more powerful than you, chanted the he-hamster Cinderella. I can chop you up into a million pieces. I can dig a hole into the core of this earth and unleash the larva beneath and consume your waters. I can restore land. So if you will, leave, and never harrass us."

"Or what?" laughed the King.

"Or I, the Godfather of Fairies, shall-"

Crunch. Crunch. Crunch. Burp.

The masses stayed silent.

"And who might you be? O great Beast?" asked King Neptune as he marvelled at the giant beast that towered above him.

"I am the Prince of the Forbidden Forest. I am the Prince that lost my daughter to the Godfather of Fairies. I am the Prince that lost my wife Belle to the insanities of this world. I am the last Prince."

"You just ate the Godfather of Fairies,"

"Yea. It was an oath. I swore to kill him. And now I have. And before you ask. This is your era. Rule wisely. I have no intentions and no demands, except that you never torture or take a life of any land being that causes you no offense. My people will die, as should they. But they will not all die, for that is the nature of Fairyland. Your waterworld will end, one day, even if it takes a thousand years. But I am certain that it will end, for that is the nature of Fairyland. If my people die, then so be it, for that is also the nature of Fairyland. I can do nothing. I cannot make you unflood this world, nor can I make my citizens grow gills."

"Wise words, Prince of Beasts. I am sorry. And I promise you no harm shall come from the Merpeople for as long as I live, and I intend to live for another few centuries."

"Thank you."

As King Neptune departed and submerged into the oceans beyond, the Prince of Beasts walked away, toward the remaining pockets of the forest. The masses did not like what they have just heard, but they knew their time has come to an end, and they bowed in silence as the Prince of Beasts walked among his people for the last time.

*

Somewhere in the Forest...

"I am anointed, chosen, destined to be the Queen of Hamsters. Even the Prince of Beasts let me go. He found me too precious to kill, and spared my life. No other hamster can claim such an encounter. I bid all of you, hamsters of this realm, to submit to my rule! I can take this realm, this species, to greater heights!"

"Hail Queen Cinderella! Long live the queen!!! Long live the Queen!!!"

*

DVD Review: Kingdom of Heaven

I just finished watching the extended "director's cut" version of Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven, one of the financial cinematic disasters of 2005. I haven't started reviewing films yet, but a summary at the time would have had these key points.

1) Jeremy Irons (Tiberias), David Thewlis (Hospitaler) and Edward Norton (King Baldwin) performed exceptionally well, and while yes, they were blessed with good lines, they delivered those lines in the most memorable fashion.

2) The costumes should have won them an Oscar, or at least a nomination.

3) Sybilla (Eva Green) sorta disappeared from the movie midway through the show, doing nothing but crying, moaning, and showing her grouchy face like she's done the worst thing in the world. Well, technically she DID make Guy De Lusignian (Marton Csokas) the baddie, king of Jerusalem after her brother died.... but also, that was everyone else's fault as well. So... she didn't make sense.

4) For a Ridley Scott film, it was one of the worst piece of editing I've ever seen. the story doesn't flow. The pacing is weird. And Grrr. It was rather frustrating.

5) The score by Harry Gregson Williams was one of the best works every done by a Hans Zimmer apprentice.

I would've given it a C. I watched it twice.

*

After watching the extended version.

1. Sybilla makes sense.

2. The story makes sense, in every regard. Editing flaw fixed.

3. The story takes on a darker tone. More sombre. And certainly more powerful.

4. All the positives from the above review are enchanced.

5. Rating: A

*

I suppose this is a case where you can say that the editing made all the difference between pretty good, and superstar good

"There is a connection between the progress of a society and progress in the arts. The age of Pericles was also the age of Phidias. The age of Lorenzo de' Medici was also the age of Leonardo Da Vinci. The age of Elizabeth was also the age of Shakespeare - "

Superman Returns Again

So yesterday I clicked to watch the trailer for Hollywoodland. It stars Adrien Brody, Ben Affleck, Diane Lane, and Bob Hoskins. I wondered what it was all about. All I knew was that it was about Hollywood farce and stuff like that. When the trailer finished loading, guess what? It's about SUPERMAN!

Okay, let me be clear. It's not about Superman, but rather the guy who acted as Superman in the 1950s/60s (can't remember) in the T.V. series called "The Adventures of Superman". The actor was George Reeves. Ben Affleck plays George Reeves. The movie is about Reeves suicide, and how Adrien Brody's character thinks that it's murder instead, and goes on a search for the truth. it's based on a true story, so.

Here are other trailers that I've watched recently that caught my attention for both good and bad reasons. Click on images to watch trailer.

Rocky Balboa.
Somebody help. Stallone is doing it again. He's made 10+ years of razzies and now he's trying to salvage his career by making a sequel to the one and only big hit he's ever made. Help!

The Fountain - Er. The first 30 seconds the trailer got my attention before it started looking weird. About eternal life. Stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.

Lov - Stars many different people. It's a short movie with many random short stories, mostly about love.

The Illusionist. Stars Edward Norton and Paul Giamatti. Anything with these two actors are worth watching, regardless of what you think of the storyline. It's about magicians. It's perhaps a little edgier than The Prestige
