My Fellow Malaysians

50 years is a long time.
In hindsight this country has done a lot. But history has an end to how far we look.
It is 50 years. In 50 years we have done a lot.

The future, however, has no end. Foresight offers no boundaries except those that we place on ourselves. Be it 2020 or 3030, the future is long.

From that perspective, I almost feel as if we are moving backwards.

My sincere apologies for my bleak feeling of Malaysia's year of Jubilee.

Happy birthday, Malaysia. 50 is good. Live free.
Live free.

I pray that the chains that has bound this country in a prison thicker than Tartarus will be broken. That the weight of giants shall be lifted away.

Live free.

I am Reading

5 books.

The Audacity of Hope - Barack Obama
It's a good read so far, though I disagree with half of his beliefs and principles. This is just me taking an interest in American politics. And trying to make it a habit to read something I don't like. In this case it's auto-biographies and liberal democrats.

Vengeance - George Jonas
The book that inspired Munich. It's... good, but again. Making a habit of reading something I don't usually read. Spy books and military material. But the language is strong and the story has been riveting so far.

Next - Michael Crichton
On a regular day, his books fall under the category of things I like to read because of its plausibility and thrillingness in today's world. But as interesting as the premises are in Next, so far none of the characters have excited me. Genetics can be really gross though, that much I can say.

Models for Writers - Short Essays for Composition - Alfred Rosa/Paul Eschholz (eds)
Don't ask. It's for work. Just found myself flipping through the pages even when I didn't need to.

Speeches that Changed the World
Random buy when I was out book shopping with Sarah last night. Read about a third of it already. I liked it that the first great speech in the book is Moses' Ten Commandments. Actually I bought this book to see the different styles of writing a speech... because maybe... you know... Idiot something one day I might need to really buff Fikri up in his great oratary scenes... "My fellow Faltasians... now is our finest hour!!!"

Instant Expert: The Malaysian Media - Sonia Randhawa
Finally got round to reading through my former lecturer's little handbook on Malaysian media law. It's very tongue and cheek, and great fun.

*

Yes I am reading all of the above at the same time. Ask me again in a few months what have I finished.

In the meantime. Wait for Stardust, due in cinemas in November. Adapted from a Neil Gaiman book.

And Beowulf, in December. A Robert Zemeckis film, starring many many famous people. Written by Neil Gaiman.

Also, be ready for "Sehinnga KLku Menyanyi". Don't know who did it, but it'll be shown on 9th Sept at Central Market Annexe. Fikri edited the thing, which is why I'm announcing it here. So watch it cos he edited it.

And there's word Idiot Nation might be screened sometime soon, though I'm not sure on what date. When I know you'll know. Seems like President Zulfadhli hasn't finished with his agenda.

*

And that's all for now.

I must tell

you that Sarah tried swiping her ATM at a credit card slot.

Please laugh.

Digital Disease

Almost everything on the digital platform is based on something that is not digital. Its creations are the most innovative of things, yet still limited by the powers from the past. It is a silent limitation, a well hidden internal torture. Digital is not new. It is merely a version. That is its best kept secret, the highest stigma in the world of communication: The inability to pro-create.

A House

There's this house... It's not very big. Just your average home. Enough for two people to live in, at least for now, anyway. Inside the house, the most important feature is that everything is in present time. The inside of the house is what we understand as 'now'. It is inside the house that we do most of our living. Everything is in present tense in the house.

Except for everything, that is. The pictures hung on the wall tell stories of yesterday in its most blatant form, by well... showing pictures. Inside the storeroom and the random stray box lying somewhere around the house are little tokens collected from past adventures. Even the 'present time' materials have memories attached to them. It's how we know we are in the present, by knowing that some things are in the past.

Outside the house, everything is in future forms. It is our hopes, our dreams, our desires, intentions, and every possibility. Outside the house, the decisions are ambigious for now. But there are many decisions. We use the words 'will' and 'going to'. Sometimes we use 'maybe'. Nothing is certain. But most things are pleasant. Most things are good things out there. There are bad things too, of course. But we only appreciate the good what's good when we know how bad the bad stinks.

Sometimes we peek outside the house. Sometimes we take the keys and go out for a stroll in the garden, along the road, and sometimes at the nearby park. On one or two occasions, we actually flew to the moon. I can't wait for the time when we would go out further than that, and not go back into the house. It would mean that we'd have to build a new house. A new present time. And look forward to a new future time.

Ah never know. I am hiding the keys.
But you have the spare.
I open the door sometimes and you run out like a bunny on Duracells.

Story of a Star

it feels good to finish something. I started writing many things in the past few months. But didn't manage to finish any. Tonight I did. And it's a huge sigh of relief.

*

Here's a short clip

*

Grandfather Star
Esther. Walk with me for a while more if you will… See that little light over there? That is a planet, the only planet all of creation that has organic inhabitants. Humans, as God calls them. It is a special planet, with a special people.

Esther

Why is it special?

Grandfather Star
Well, it is special for one reason above the many others that exist. Because humans are like God. God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created them: male and female He created them. To see a human is to see a reflection and representation of the almighty God Himself. That is why they are special. We stars give light in the most physical sense, being suns to different planets and stars to other worlds, but humans… they radiate no light of their own, yet they are the brightest light that God has ever made…

I must say

that my two month stint at The Language House was a rather interesting experience. The above photo was the class that I took for over a month, and they made my stay there incredibly good. Every single one of them.
They probably won't find this blog, and they probably won't see me again as they come from all over the planet, but yep, the most pleasant bunch of people.

10 Things that I'm involved in at present

1. Working. I will be working in a new place starting next week.

2. Trying to find time and a quiet place to record about an hour's worth of narration for some World Vision HIV exhibition. Thanks to Liang for passing my name on to his sis. Now I get to see how my voice sounds on recording.

3. In the process of stringing together a last minute breakneck speed shoot. Maybe Friday. Won't reveal what film this is about.

4. Waiting for Paul to export a small 365 Student Ministry file so I can put it up on YouTube for all to see.

5. Waiting for Wednesday night, Sunday evening, and anything random in between.

6. Trying to figure out where the nearest tax office is just to get my stupid number. I never got a letter. New workplace wants my number. So what am I supposed to do? Sigh.

7. Still thinking if a 27 minute soundtrack is worth compiling, or should I wait till I have about 40 minutes of material...

8. Considering some long term options about... well... nerdy things.

9. The most jumbled part of youth ministry in church.

10. Wondering if I should pursue a career in singing horribly.

"Look, if you think we're wrong, if you think Mr.Hopkins should honestly get paid more than Mrs. Chadwick, then I respect that. but if you think we're right and you won't speak up cause you can't be bothered, then God, Jed, I don't even want to know you."

"You know if you don't wanna run again, I respect that. But if you don't run because you think it's gonna be too hard... or you think you're gonna lose... well, God, Jed, I don't even wanna know you."

- The best line by Delores Landingham I take rather personally. "I don't even wanna know you"

Autobots Descent

arguably my favorite scene in the movie...

The government, no matter what its failures in the past and in times to come for that matter, government can be a place where people come together and where no one gets left behind. No one gets left behind. An instrument of good.

Rambutans and the Many Things.

So anyway, it's been a while, I know.

Let me start with random things.

I went to Giant just now to get some dinner. Well, I ate my own homemade sandwich just now. I have this 3 hour break between 4 - 7.30... so what I did was I went down and picked up some fruit and a bottle of yoghurt. When I was lining up to pay for my stuff, the lady in front of me was putting down her few cans of beer. I think she's in her mid 40s, and her face was in a perpetual pout. So anyway, I put my stuff down beside hers, and I could almost feel/sense her staring down at my stuff thinking that we should swap our stuff. Anyway, in my head, I thought to myself, "'lady, it's not worth being depressed. stay healthy like me. in my mid 20s and only eating rambutan," haha. Oh well.

*

I have some very monster-like photos of Sarah if anyone wants to see them. Almost godzilla-like.

*

I read in the papers today that Transformers is now the biggest movie in the history of Malaysia. Like wow. Proud of those autobots.

By the way, Meng Hong sent me some designs of local cars turning into robots. Nicely done, though there was no Proton Wira. I'll post them up here sometime soon.

*

And friends, please don't bother going to Fatty Crab at taman megah. Rip off I tell you.

*

I feel like going on a holiday, though I'm not sure where. I wanna take my camera and film a road movie as I travel with some friends. I also want to actually film a shoot-em-up story that I have written but have no time to film. And I miss love stories.

*

By the way, I'm leaving my current job in 2 weeks time. Yes, it's a short stint, but I'm shifting over to a place where I think I'll be more fulfilled in terms of job description. Thank God for open doors.

*

There you go, a longer than usual (in recent times anyway) post. let me round it up by telling you a story that I'm just gonna make up right now as I go. It's something called a river-of-consciousness (or crap, if you know what I mean).

*

Once upon a future, there lived a Chickenosaurus, who pecked every human being in sight and ate them all up. With its sharp talons it stabbed its victims and tore them apart, and with its giant feathery tale it swept every living thing off its feet up into the air and letting them fall into its beak.

The Chickenosaurus was so horrific everyone in the world named it after the horrendrous woman that they all knew... Eve.

So Eve terrorized the planet for many many years, until the humans devised a plan. They stole an egg from Eve's hatchery and hatched an even more powderful Chikenosaurus, three times the size of Eve with talons of gold. They gave the perfect anti-Eve chicken the most appropriate name... Adam.

So Adam made Eve fall in love with him, and they flew out into space, and lived on the moon, happily ever after.

*

One day, an entire army of Chikenosaurus' invaded Earth, but failed. They nearly succeeded though.

*

And many years later, Hollywood, or what's left of it anyway, made a movie about that.

*

The End.
