Now for those who know me through and through, I generally listen to a consistent amount of broodingly pulsating music, which drains my soul of all forms of happiness.

Well mostly it distracts me the least, and helps me work better because I get slightly edgier.

And 98% of the time I listen to motion picture soundtracks, mostly because lyrics distract me. People blabbing away non stop and all.

I DO listen to happy music, not much. But I do. And I rarely play them over and over again.

But for some weird reason, I just constantly play back this track from Howl's Moving Castle, by Joe Hisaishi, ever since I got it for Christmas. It's playing right now, actually, for the trillionth time.

Can't help but see skies part for something more beautiful.

Merry New Year

All things new indeed.

Merry New Year.

Short Story:: Gods of Many Things

And the gods of this land laughed when I finished reading a book about gods in America.

“And so you believe that God raised Christ from the dead at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come; and has put everything under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him that fills all in all?”

That was quite a mouthful, I thought to myself as I heard that voice speak into my head. I wasn’t quite sure which colorful character was it that was speaking to me, but it was probably either the god of paper, god of tables, or the god of ladders.

“Don’t confuse me with the gods of major superstitions, my friend.”

Then what are you? A god of minor superstitions? I wasn’t aware at the time what the difference between major and minor superstitions was. Superstitions were superstitions. I once wore a Peanuts T-shirt for every exam that I had because I believed that with the T-shirt on, my exam would be peanuts to do. So far it has the track record of scoring very well for every paper. It’s trivial, but it’s still superstition. It would not have caused a worldwide following and worship of Charlie Brown and that dog, but it was still superstition. No different than believing that one would die of bad luck if he or she pointed his or her legs at the altar of smoke that clouded the vision of the painted eyes of the portrait of ancestors and semi-fictional gods.

“Your Snoopy t-shirt is what one would call a minor superstition, yes. I am not minor. I’m subtle. I am the little belief that if one studies too many hours, he would do very well in his exams. That sort of thing.”

From that point onwards I found myself conversing with this talkative god.

So you’re the one who package innocent lies to steal hours from unknowing people.

“Indeed so, I am the god of examinations. I am the biggest lie youths face today.”

Yes, you are. I flunked papers and was chastised for it. I was punished for not believing in the lie that if I took 5 hours of classes a day and another 2 hours of tuition above that every day (which would total to about 35 – 40 hours of studying a week) I would do very well for my papers.

“Not exactly. You were punished for trusting the god of sunlight dreams.”

I didn’t know it was wrong to daydream. Now I would be careful.

“You’re slow, boy. It’s not wrong to daydream. But you fell into the lie that daydreams are your food for life. Just like how you know studying isn’t a lie until you believe in my… persuasions that you can never study enough.”

True. So what’s in it for you?

“The whole deal about gods is worship. That’s why Lucifer fell. He wanted to be worshipped. That’s the whole gist of the book you just read, the need for gods to be worshipped.”

Aha. Of course. And?

“The sacrifice I cherish most from people is their time. Any hour spent as waste is incense to my nose, energy for my soul, and strength for my cause.”

Don’t you think the gods of computers and televisions want incense of hours as well? They seem to profit more than you do.

“No, they don’t. As you have cleverly calculated yourself. The best of the lot study between thirty to forty hours a week, sometimes more. That’s easily a quarter of all the available hours in a week. People sleep properly for maybe about another quarter. The rest of the gods can wrestle over the other fifty percent. I’m happy with my quarter. That’s why I’m the god of subtle superstition. No one audits me.”

How is it that you’re pleased with their “worship” when they do not even know it’s you they’re worshipping?

“They’ll know when they go to hell.”

People don’t go to hell for being studious, even if it’s being stupidly hardworking.

“Then they’ll know when they realize how much they’ve left out.”

Only you forget that for some, there is such a thing called redemption.

“Redemption does not exist. It is also a lie. Religion is a lie. The god, the almighty father that you believe in –yes, notice I am speaking his name without capital letters and glorious emphasis- is also a superstition. Salvation is a superstition. Only one person in your bible has been promised directly and straightforwardly a place in paradise. That’s the criminal in Luke. You were reminded of that fact while reading your novel. It was there as well. It’s one of your favorite bible stories, isn’t it? No one knows for sure if your king of kings would really greet you with a feast of joy when you die in his name.”

I do not deny what you have just said. That is all possible. But even the weakest assurance I have in the Prince of Peace carries more value than the most promising promises and most seductive charms you can ever present in your eternity. Because I know for sure your words are lies. While at least, for my King of Kings, there is a certain possibility that I’m right, and that He just might keep His promise. If you were me, you’d know where I’m coming from.

“Then it is truth that you speak. And if all that I speak is a lie, then I must be lying to you now.”

The only thing that amazes me about demons-

"Gods."

gods, then, without the capital “G”. The only thing that amazes me about gods like yourself is your ability to remain loyal to Lucifer. If all of you are liars of all things, wouldn’t your oath of loyalty toward him be a lie too?

“We are bound to him, eternally.”

Now that’s a lie too. Why don’t you lie to Lucifer now, turn your back on him, cease to be a god, and return as an angel for the Lord. I am fairly certain that the Almighty Father is a God of mercy and redemption. Those are part of what salvation is built upon. Come back to the Father, god of examinations.

“I cannot. I have pledged my allegiance to the devil, and must serve him eternally, even if that means-“

Suffering in fire and brimstone for all eternity after the end.

“Yes.”

I could hear a chill in his voice as the god of examination answered that.

So there is, unbelievably, capacity for you to tell the truth, sometimes.

“Yes.”

So tell me, is salvation a superstition? Remember, if you cannot lie at the expense of Lucifer, then surely you cannot lie at the expense of He who cast Lucifer from the heavens.

“I will say no more on the matter.”

Your loyalty to the devil is tested and proven, as is your faithfulness in acknowledging my faith. So tell me, what of your lies are lies?

“I am only a god so long as I am made a god. People will only become stupid when they crawl beneath a table if that is so what they choose to believe. People will only die after walking beneath the ladder if that is so what they choose to believe. People will only lose the capability to do math if they eat fish eggs if that is what they so choose to believe. People will only have more babies if children jump on their beds during their weddings if that is what they believe. People will score 99.5 instead of 99.4 after an additional 25 hours of studies if that is what they want to believe. By making gods out of demons, people lose the vision within themselves to see miracles, for miracles, like superstitions, require belief.”

So superstition blinds us all from miracles... I thank you for your honesty.

I understand that people will always have to choose if they have to sacrifice their hours to you, consciously or unconsciously. But I hope, dear god of examination, that at last your confidence is broken, your devilish integrity questionable, and your security broken.

“You have your own truths, and lies, to tell. Have no affair with my business, and I will not have any with yours. Go your own way, human.”

We shall see.

What do you know, I wrote something. It's a little preachy, but oh well. It's inspired through and through by American Gods, the Neil Gaiman book I just read a few hours back about gods and demons.

Hope you enjoyed it.

Cleaning Up

While I was munching away a piece of biscuit in my room doing nothing in particular, I looked at my table (and the rest of my room) and realize that it was one big mess. Just two days ago when a friend was coming over, I told myself not to be bothered with the mess, because the mess is primarily made up of papers with an infinite amount of written words, or bad sketches, and lots of books, and many many many issues of TIME.

My mess made me feel intelligent, or at least, productive.

So anyway, I read 3 books in the last 5 days. The Terminal Man (really old book) and State of Fear by Michael Crichton, and American Gods, by Neil Gaiman. I've read half of Tash Aw's the Harmony Silk Factory before setting it aside for the moment, and read Thomas Harris' Hannibal for the third time.

So my point is, when I read things I like, particularly stuff by Gaiman, I feel inspired to write more. Well, I feel inspired to write, period. Just like how after watching a good film I think of films I want to make as well. It doesn't make me a man of direction or vision. I don't necessarily do them, I just want to do them.

I've been reading a lot because it helps kill time.Movies kill 2 - 3 hours. Books kill 7 - 8 hours and sometimes more. And the rest of the time I've been staring at my computer trying to generate the script idea that has been conveniently and comfortable (probably lazily) in the banks of my mind. To date I have absent mindedly saved 3 separate files, in which not more than 20 words were written for each document.

So reading encourages me to try. Sitting in front of the computer makes me WANT to try to get it out of my head. It's not like I've not done this before. It's just... blah. Reading those books made me feel that it's okay staring at the screen and typing a few words here and there. Maybe the gods will light my way. Whatever.

So back to the mess in my room. I did not throw anything out or clear my desk of rubbish. With the biscuit in my mouth and my cup of milo on the floor, I stacked all the paper together. Arranged some of the magazines, and shelved some books. There's this textbook I used in one of my writing classes, called "The Writing Book" by Kate Grenville. It's an okay book that teaches you the important aspects of writing. I somehow felt like flipping through it.

Let me at this juncture note that this is not some dramatic story where after reading a few pages of a writing handbook, suddenly feel light and weightless and have all the words of heaven and hell pour through me like the rushing rivers of... wherever the waters rush powerfully.

Instead, I was drawn to the back pages of publishing advice. And here Guru Kate Grenville states, under the heading of "The Bottom Line" (which is pretty much the last paragraph in the entire textbook)...

"The bottom line about writing fiction is that it ought to be exhilarating, as well as perhaps frustrating. The world has enough books and enough writers already, so unless you find writing satisfying you might as well do something else..."

I realize I could have just typed up the above quote and state that it really did not make my day, but ended up writing a whole long post about how I ended up reading that quote. It is perhaps a waste of my time now writing this whole dramatic piece of utter discouragement, but maybe this is what I feel is an escape from my responsibilities.

At least I am writing something here. And at least I have a few friendly readers who are probably slapping their hands on their foreheads calling me names which they don't really mean.

Okay. Back to microsoft word, to a tale about moving objects, adultery, and possibly a bit of a bloodbath somewhere in the middle of the story.

Ding DING ding DING DING DING

My brother bought me this lovely Christmas gift

The writing is in Japanese. Basically it's the soundtrack for Howl's Moving Castle, the most recent Hayao Miyazaki cartoon.

Composed by Joe Hisaishi.

In case you're still blur, he's the guy who composed for Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. If you are still blur then too bad.
Merry Christmas

Happy Birthday

I know he just passed away, but happy birthday, John Spencer.

Rest in peace.
Half-heartedness.

Gets on my nerve. But I guess things just turn out that way sometimes.

John Spencer dies

John Spencer, the guy who played White House Chief of Staff Leo McGarry in the ultimate T.V. series hit The West Wing has passed away at the age of 58. He died of a heart attack.

Before his most memorable role as the fatherly, workaholic, alcoholic second man to the President of the United States, Spencer acted in films such as The Rock and The Negotiator, as well as a lawyer in L.A. Law back in the 80s.

As Leo McGarry, he was nominated for the Emmy award for best supporting actor five times, with one win.

If Martin Sheen is the heart of The West Wing, then John Spencer is the soul of it.

*

Sincere condolences.

Out of respect, there will be no blog posts about film/T.V. for a week.

It's called knowing who to like. Ha.

I must say that not every thing I like in the entertainment industry gets recognized the way I feel they should be recognized. For example, my favorite movie of the year usually never wins best picture. My favorite visual effects film almost never wins.

The West Wing is probably one of the very few entertainment product that I truly love that turned out to be record breakers during the awards season. (Don't get me started on the stats. Basically no other T.V. series has ever won as many Emmys as The West Wing)

When it comes to music, I'm even more on the crap side, because I don't listen to THAT many singers, and I don't keep up. Every year I look at the nominations list just for fun and realize that I don't know anybody.

Except for U2

They're old and they're past their best. But they still light up the Grammys every single year. They got 5 nominations this year. What's even better is that the songs nominated are songs I like from the album "How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb".

It's just nice to see stuff you like since you were small still in the running.

New Film

Dear all, in my free time today, I made a new film.

I made it in my free time today while I was in the m-lab. There are lots of continuity errors from the original TaKau, but who cares. If this is your first video watching experience, It'll just be a violent experience.

For those of you who have watched TaKau, this is the story between TaKau 1 and the still pending TaKau 2.

Enjoy

More About Superheroes

No la, this is not a poll. Maybe next week, or next year.

I just saw the trailer for X-Men 3, and well... superherohype commented that "It looks like director Brett Ratner is doing an amazing job picking up the legacy from Bryan Singer, who helmed the first two films."

Aiyoh please la. It doesn't show at all la.

The designs may look faithful to the Bryan Singer designs, but the feel of show is not Singer-ish at all. A good example would be to see the teaser trailer for Superman Returns, the movie that Singer ditched X-Men for. Superman Returns feels more like X-Men, as compared to X-Men 3.

It looks too colorful. The new designs look unjustifably stupid (as compared to the first two movies, where the designs look justifiably stupid, which results in it looking very cool instead). Juggernaut looks like He-Man brought to life (speaking of which, John Woo IS making a He-Man movie in the near future).

A few scenes gives me the idea that this might turn out to be some sort of... well... let's kill everybody sort of movie. Hmm. Mortal Kombat 2 comes to mind. Now that show deserves a freebie on my rating scale.

Okay. That being all said, I must move on to what I see as potential for this movie. It doesn't look ALL that bad. I'm only ranting because I REALLY like the Bryan Singer stuff in the first 2 movies.

For example, Archangel/Angel isn't my favorite character in the comics, but here he looks rather cool Nothing special, but cool.

Of course, the lovable few returns, which give me some hope. I love Halle Berry's movies and Hugh Jackman has been spectacular so far. Anna Paquin has always been one of the most beautiful actresses to me, and James Marsden as Cyclops is... well... Cyclops.

The one plotline that is sure to make things interesting is the return of Jean Grey/Phoenix. The most popular question surrounding this movie (other than who the hell is going to direct it, some months back that is) is "Is it going to be a Dark Phoenix story?" where Jean Grey (Famke Jansen) comes back as phoenix incarnate, bent on destroying the world.

The teaser answered part of that. Jean Grey will have screen time as a member of Magneto's team (the acolytes, I presume, unless Ratner decides to call them Thundercats or something like that), and I like the look on her face.

Much better than Hayden Christensen looking like Darth Vader huh.

So unless there are delays, next year's box office battle of the year will be between

Who will triumph?

The world's greatest superheroes, or the world's greatest superhero?

Superratty Film Online

Finally, after a day's work back in Cheesy Studios, I am proud to present to my readers Superratty Films Online

Quite a few friends over the last few months have expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that only pictures and write-ups are on the film blog (and this blog), with nothing to watch. So here we go...

I figured that it would be fitting to make my first short film the first official video. So click on the image below for Psycho: A Real Mystery - Special Edition to view my very first short film made back in July 2004.

The special edition includes 1.5 seconds worth of never-seen-before additional footage, various re-editing, as well as sound improvements (not that there's much sound anyway).

*

Also, if you guys are interested... The teaser-trailer for my most recent short film, Captivation , is also available.

*

So, to my friends who has followed/been involved in my psychotic filmmaking process over the years, cheers. Now anywhere you go, these videos are online for you to laugh at old times :)

For the rest of you, enjoy.

Operation Test How Keng is This Program

Sze Ning introduced me to this new site that allows video uploads quite easily. As it does not allow uploads over 100mb at a time, some of the shorts that I upload with be of a lower quality. I've just uploaded a small 17mb file to see how it works.

Click here to see the little mock-video I made of Sarah some months back. It's not a film, it's not anything actually. It's just a mock video of Sarah, for testing purposes.

If it works I'll slowly upload more and more. Don't be in a rush to expect stuff. I have to re-export some of the show to fit it under 100mbs.

Anyway, yes, in case you forgot to click up there, click HERE to view the test video.

Suggestion. Pause the video, let the entire thing load first, then play and watch it smoothly. Unless your connection has the most incredible speed for streaming videos, of course. I notice that the quality lags anyway, especially if you select the full screen function.

Anyway, enjoy!

p/s Sorry Sarah, I didn't have any smaller files to test. The second smallest would be the one with you and Fikri. So either way, you were going to be THE guinea pigress.
